Topiary
An electronic, biofeedback installation I developed at the Center for Integrated Media at Cal Arts, and extended in residence at STEIM Center for the Development of New Musical Interfaces in Amsterdam, NE.
The basic structure of the installation uses Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) to measure the general level of excitement or anxiety in the participant, who could be anyone in the gallery who chooses to interact with the installation, one at a time. The participant then views video that reacts to this participant's GSR, effectively creating a feedback loop between the person's emotional state, the measurement of that state, and the expression and uptake of video controlled by that state.
Extensions of the piece, including Topiary II and III, which I am currently developing, involve group musical and visual improvisation, both controlled and inadvertant, using networked iterations of the system.
