About:
As a writer, I make mostly a kind of narrative prose-poetry, which I exhibit on the page (Joyland, Antennae, Eoagh, Shampoo), the stage (The Santa Monica Museum of Art at Bergamot Station, The Manual Archives, The Velaslavasay Panorama), and in readings (REDCAT, The Stain of Poetry). I also edit, with Janice Lee and Joe Milazzo, the journal [out of nothing].
As an artist, I make photographic images, biofeedback installation, and performative/participatory pieces that roughly fall under the umbrella of relational aesthetics. I have performed and shown work at Machine Project, Telic Arts Exchange, Sea and Space Explorations, and Burning Man.
As a musician, I make a blend of folk and electronics as Careful, as well as concert music using orchestral instruments and electronics. My music has been performed at the Juliard School of Music, The Royal College of Music (UK), The Knitting Factory–NYC, Glasslands Gallery, The Smell, Pianos (in residence), the STEIM Center (Amsterdam, in residence), and Monte Vista Projects.
Artist Statement
Informed by my background in Physics, Linguistics and Cognitive Science, I think of my work as experimental, in the sense that I seek answers to complex questions by undertaking defined procedures. As such, my work, beyond mixing genres (fiction, poetry, memoir) and media (image, sound, text, electronics, participation), mixes discipline, borrowing sometimes-tongue-in-cheek logical paradoxes, contemporary scientific theory, and subtle linguistic and perceptual devices to pull apart the cognitive process and discover new ways to explore the social and meta-physical self.
